The Journey of the Perfect Milk Tea

Milk Tea or Bubble Tea or Pearl Milk Tea is a popular drink for Asian Countries. I first heard about it when I had my vacation in Vietnam last 2009. It is a popular drink there but I didn’t bother trying it. Now, I feel I missed something. Sigh. It seems that it’s getting everyone’s attention and favorite nowadays here in the Philippines. The tea shops are like mushrooms popping up all over the place. And I admit, I’m a milk tea lover. From a perspective of a not so health conscious person, I don’t know if it has health benefit but I guess it’s healthier than drinking soda. LOL.

Hong Kong-style milk tea is a beverage originating from Hong Kong consisting of black tea with evaporated milk or condensed milk. Milk tea is similar, except with evaporated or condensed milk instead of ordinary milk. It is called “milk tea” (Chinese: 奶茶, Cantonese naai5 cha4) to distinguish it from “Chinese tea” (Chinese: 茶, Cantonese cha4), which is served plain. Outside of Hong Kong it is referred to as Hong Kong-style milk tea. The first criterion of a good cup of milk tea is its “smoothness” (香滑); in other words, how creamy and full-bodied it is. Another criterion for tasty milk tea (and also bubble tea) is some white frothy residue inside the lip of the cup after some of it has been drunk. Bubble tea, also known as pearl milk tea, boba milk tea, or boba is a tea-based drink invented in tea shops in Taichung, Taiwan, during the 1980s. Most bubble tea recipes contain a tea base mixed with fruit or milk. Ice-blended versions are usually mixed with fruit or syrup, resulting in a slushy consistency. Most bubble teas come with small chewy tapioca balls (粉圓, fěnyuán), commonly called “pearls” (珍珠, zhēnzhū) or “boba” (波霸, bōbà). There are many variants of the drinks, and many kinds of types are used and ingredients added. The most popular bubble drinks are bubble milk tea with tapioca and bubble milk green tea with tapioca.

Around 2010, when I started drinking milk teas. The very first tea shop that I’ve tried is Chatime. Wee.. I think their Royal Milk Tea is the best. But I don’t like adding pearls because it’s a bit huge and hard. The also sell different kind of teas and fruit juices and it’s affordable depending on the size. And I really keep on coming back to this shop. They have several stores here in Manila. Try to check CHATIME’s Facebook page for more information.

Chatime Milk Tea

Chowking Naicha Milk Tea When I was still in Cagayan de Oro, milk teas are not so popular then. That’s why Chowkings Naicha is a great alternative. Although, it doesn’t taste like an authentic milk tea but okay na rin. 😉

Kenko Naicha Milk Tea Last 2011, Kenko Naicha Tea Lounge opened in Cagayan de Oro City. I’m not really sure if they are the first milk tea shop there. I can still remember, I was the happiest girl in town when they opened in Robinsons Mall. HAHAHAH 😀 At last, I won’t be traveling anymore just to have a taste of milk tea. Compared to their milk teas that I’ve tried here in Manila, it tasted different though but still I love it. And it’s delicious and refreshing especially their Wintermelon Tea and Japanese Green Milk Tea, are my favorite. Don’t hesitate to add some sinkers also. But I don’t like their pearls because it’s a bit hard. Price range will depend on the size and flavor but I guarantee you, it’s very affordable. After few months, the next thing I know milk teas became so popular already in CDO. When I visited last month, I’ve seen various milk tea shops, which I’ll make sure to try them all once I get back. *wishful*

Bubbatea Licious Milk Tea The cheapest milk tea that I’ve tried is Bubbatea Licious. The price range still vary on the size but it’s very affordable compared to other brands. It taste good also but I don’t like the ice that they put on their milk teas. I think its too big. Their Royal Milk Tea and Strawberry Milk Tea are my top favorite.

Just recently I’ve tried Serenitea. I’m not sure if they are Japanese brand or Japanese inspired tea but I’m seeing Japanese sounded Milk tea flavor. HAHAHAHA 😀 I love their Wintermelon milk tea, Hokkaido Milk Tea. I also love adding pearls because it’s very soft compared to the others that I’ve tried. They also have different milk teas and fruits juices. Price is quite similar to Chatime.

Serenitea Milk Tea

I will continue my journey of trying all the milk teas here in the Philippines. And I know, There are still a lot of tea shops that I want to try. I’ve also read that there are health benefits of drinking teas, well, I hope that includes milk tea. Til next time. xoxo

Denim Shorts

Although summer is already over, I’ve noticed ripped, dip dye, printed, studded denim shorts are so IN nowadays. Wearing shorts show a casual look and definitely perfect for any day. You can pair it with a shirt, sleeveless, vest, or any formal top. But did you realize that finding a perfect denim shorts is a bit stressful and pricey too.

Yes, I’m a denim shorts lover ever since. Probably it describes something about my layback attitude. Aside from that its very comfortable wearing shorts especially the weather in the Philippines is a bit humid. Just to share some denim shorts that I have. 🙂

Xhien Denim Shorts

Well take a look of Amanda Seyfried and Hillary Duff on denim shorts. They look so lovely right? And aside from that it looks fashionable.

Lately, I’ve been eyeing some DIY shorts online. From the phrase DO IT YOURSELF (DIY), means you can actually do or make this type of shorts at home by simply modifying, repairing your old shorts into something new. The fact that doing your own shorts, will save you a lot of money. I love to do my own DIY Shorts, I tried it last year by simply cutting my old pants and add ripped designs. But now, It seems that I don’t have enough time to do it because of my time demanding job. While browsing online I feel so envious looking at these designs from HEYLILAHEY. It looks so pretty and good right? The styles are really fashionable and unique.

You can actually put some colored dye instead of bleaching the denim shorts to add more style. It will also show the artistic side of you. I know it will be fun doing this. For me, I hope time will permit me today this, probably one of these days.

Korean Ice Cream

I can still remember the moment Sandara Park( now Dara of 2ne1), joined Star Circle Quest and how Filipino fans admire her and everything about her successful life is a history. The next thing I know, Korean craze for TV Series, Movies , Artists, singers invaded Philippines as fast as a blink of an eye. I would agree I’m one of those getting gaga over watching Korean TV Series, Artists and all. A lot of Korean tourists are visiting here in the country also. But there’s more, I’ve been seeing a lot of Korean Stores also selling Korean food, stuff and etc. and a lot of Filipino love it . Since I’m such a Korean fan, I’m also curious to try something Korean. Although I remember, I tried eating Kimchi didn’t pass my taste. But how can someone resist trying Korean Ice Cream. *grin*

I was lucky to find one at the Waltermart Mall in Makati where we usually do our weekly groceries. It’s been a routine that when I go there, I try different ice cream flavor. And yes, I’ve tried most of their ice creams. Out of excitement, I didn’t bother checking the price when I bought it. I know I’m such a loser. But all I can remember, it ranges from Php35-Php50, very affordable. It’s very delicious and perfect for an afternoon snack too.

Korean Ice Cream

Korean Ice Cream

For Korean they call the waffle ice cream as Bungeoppang (lit. “crucian carp cake/bread”), the term they use for Taiyaki. The Binggrae (빙그레, Bing-Geu-Reh) Company, made it popular and offer different type of ice cream based on bungeoppang.

My Verdict:

Pangtoa Cookie and Cream Flavor – one of my favorite ice cream sandwiches. the waffle is soft and it’s a perfect combination of the ice cream flavor. Rating: 5/5
Melona Melon Flavor Ice Bar – my other favorite. this is very addicting. the melon flavor is very delicious. Rating: 5/5
MetaCone Strawberry – it’s actually similar to cornetto and the strawberry taste is really good. Rating: 4.5/5
Melona Ice Waffle Strawberry and Chocolate Flavor – i love the icecream flavors but it’s too sweet for me. i don’t really like the outside waffle also. Rating: 4/5
Melona Mango Flavor Ice Bar – this is too sweet. Just a regular ice bar flavor. Rating: 3/5

Melona is a South Korean melon-flavored ice pop, manufactured by the Binggrae Co. Ltd. Although the product is called “Melona” and is identified by its melon flavor, the ice pop also comes in other fruit flavors. Each 80 ml/2.7 fl oz bar contains 130 kcal of energy as of 2009. Melona is very popular in South Korea, where it broke many sales records upon its introduction in the 1990s.

So far, these are the Korean Ice Creams that I’ve tried. And I have yet to try another set of different flavors, I’ll update you soon. xoxo

Skin Care

Finally, I’ve created this site for reviews for beauty and cosmetic products, food, travel, fashion. I feel so corny while am doing this post, coz you know I’m not use with this. I’m not an expert and still new, so please bear with me. So for my second post, it has something to do with my beauty product, specifically for my skin care.

I have fare, sensitive skin and tends to get dry easily. And when I gets dry, I can really feel the itch on my skin. I don’t know if you have experienced that but that’s my biggest dilemma. I have tried several lotions or moisturizers, and my skim will like it for few months but I’ll get the same problem again.

Thank God I have a sister who’s so into beauty products. I’ve learned so much from her. And yes, this one is her recommendations, Aveeno Active Naturals Skin Relief Moisturizing Lotion with Cooling Menthol. This is what I’ve been using for so almost a year now. And I can see my skin loves it every day.

Aveeno is a manufacturer of skin care and hair care products in the United States and is a subsidiary of American consumer goods and pharmaceutical company Johnson & Johnson. Aveeno was founded in 1945, and its first product was their Soothing Bath Treatment. Aveeno is known for its use of “active natural” ingredients and offers products to treat skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, poison ivy, poison oak, poison sumac, pruritus ani, chicken pox, hives, and sunburn. In 2011, Aveeno’s Active Naturals Positively Radiant Tinted Moisturizer was named one of the 10 most toxic cosmetics by the Environmental Working Group. The name Aveeno is derived from the scientific name for the common oat, Avena sativa.

Aveeno Skin Care

What It Claims: skin protectant for relief of extra dry, itchy skin. moisturizes for 24 hours. no added fragrance. with cooling menthol and natural colloidal oatmeal. Specially formulated to relieve and protect extra dry, itchy skin. Unlike ordinary lotions the unique formula combines natural oatmeal, long known for its skin soothing properties, with rich emollients to moisturize skin for 24 hours. The formula also includes cooling menthol to effectively relieve the itchiness caused by dry skin. Non greasy and fast absorbing and can be used for hands and body every day. And it is noncomedogenic (wont clog pores) and contains no added fragrance or drying alcohols, so it’s even gentle enough for sensitive skin. Leaves your skin soft, smooth and naturally healthy looking skin.

My Verdict: What it claims are all true. This is what I’ve been using for so almost a year now. And I can see my skin loves it every day. The cooling effect does a good job to make me feel relax and relieve with any itch. When it says moisturizes for 24-hrs, it really is. It is also fast absorbing with no greasy effect. I can really feel my skin is so soft, smooth and never gets dry even the next day. It’s good for everyday use all over your body. I will rate this product as 5/5.

I’m not sure though if this one is still available since I haven’t seen this specific kind in the mall. They better have this product back or else I’m not a happy camper.

Before I settled to Aveeno, I have other products that I also like using on my skin.

Body Shop
Body Shop Olive Dry Oil Mist – This is my sisters recommendation. I love body shop products and this maybe one of my faves.

The Body Shop International plc, known as The Body Shop, has 2,400 stores in 61[2] countries. The company, which has its headquarters in Littlehampton, West Sussex, England, was founded in 1976 by Anita Roddick and is now part of the L’Oréal corporate group. The Body Shop carries a wide range of products for the body, face, hair and home. The Body Shop claims its products are “inspired by nature” and they feature ingredients such as marula oil and sesame seed oil sourced through the Community Fair Trade program.

What It Claims: Natural moisturizer for normal to dry skin. Uses organic ingredients.

My Verdict: Super like this product. I usually use this after taking a bath and the smell is so good and very relaxing. It also moisturize and absorb fast in your skin. It doesn’t feel greasy too. This is recommended for everyday use. I would rate this as 5/5.

Yummymummy Cocoa Butter – Still one of my sisters recommendation. She used it before when she got pregnant to prevent stretch marks. And when I had some skin problems, she recommended it to me.

Indigobaby Yummy Mummies believe in only giving the best for their babies. We have an essential selection of bath and body products, which are effective, all-natural and safe for babies’ most sensitive skin.

What It Claims: Use on your lips, face & body as a natural skin moisturizer and as a stretch mark prevention aid for preggy bellies. Also recommended for treatment of skin conditions such as eczema and dermatitis. Recent research indicates that massaging the skin with cocoa butter may help relieve stress, boost the immune system, and even prevent cancer.

My Verdict: I like the product because it does prevent dryness and moisturize your skin. The smell is also good. You’ll get tempted to taste it. HAHAHA. The only thing I don’t like is it doesn’t dry up easily on your skin. I also don’t recommend this on a sunny weather, because it feels hot in the skin. Maybe because of its ingredients. But overall, I would give it a 4.5/5 rating.

I know all of us has different skin type. These products works well for me but I’m not sure if it will for you. But the bottom line is, I will certainly recommend these products.

Japanese Ice Cream – Mochi Creme

Last week, I was strolling around SM Mall of Asia when I saw this lovely booth and caught my attention. Mochi Creme, one of the company who sells different flavor of Japanese Ice cream. I’ve already heard about this ice cream online and it gained lots of good credit. So out of curuiosity, I decided to give it a taste.

Mochi Creme

Mochi Ice Cream also known as Japanese Ice Cream is a small, rounded soft pounded sticky rice(mochi) with ice cream filling inside.

Mochi Creme

I bought Blue Vanilla and Green Tea flavor. First taste, violah! It is so delicious! There are various flavors that you can try which is around Php60 to Php65.

japanese ice cream mochi cremeMochi Creme

My Verdict: It’s worth trying but not for everyday consumption because it’s a bit expensive. It’s too small also for the price, maybe because it’s from Japan eh. LOL! But it is really a delicious dessert, snack. The soft mochi is more like tikoy but it’s a bit thinner that has a perfect taste and combination with the ice cream filling. Very addicting. My rate is 4.8/5.

For more information, you can go to Mochi Creme’s Facebook Page and check their location nationwide. I believe there are also other brands who are selling this Japanese Ice Cream and I’m thinking of trying them just to give comparison. So till next time. ^.^
